An avoidable national disgrace, again, in the hands of South Africa has been visited on Nigeria. President Jacob Zuma claimed 67 South African nationals died in the building that collapsed at the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Lagos. Interestingly enough, the figures in Nigeria, given by emergency officials on site was lower.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman, Ibrahim Farinloye, on Wednesday insisted Zuma got his figures wrong. But the South Africans countered with facts, which the Nigerian official does not seem to have.

Farinloye contradicted himself, saying, "The church management up until now has not estimated or given us any list of people trapped, so we are just working on blind guesswork until we get to the last rubble.”

The South Africans have a list of their nationals visiting the church at the time of the incident. They number 300, and were brought to Nigeria by five tour groups, who often arrange such visits to the church.

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, may need to wield the big stick against that church. Synagogue should have a list of the guests in that Guest House. Why have they not released same to emergency/rescue officials? Must Nigeria continue to be disgraced like this?
